What’s the difference between Citalopram and Escitalopram?
They’re closely related. Escitalopram (Lexapro) is made from the most active part of the Citalopram (Celexa) molecule, so the two work in the same way but aren’t exactly the same.
| Citalopram (Celexa) | Escitalopram (Lexapro) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Raises serotonin levels | Raises serotonin levels |
| FDA-approved uses | Depression in adults | Depression (adults and teens 12+) and generalized anxiety disorder |
| Usual daily dose | 20–40 mg | 10–20 mg (it’s stronger, so the dose is lower) |
| Heart rhythm risk | Higher at doses above 40 mg, so the dose is capped | Lower risk |
| Side effects | Similar to Escitalopram | Similar to Citalopram |
| Cost | Low-cost generic | Low-cost generic |
Which one is better depends on your symptoms, other medicines and heart health. Don’t switch from one to the other on your own; your doctor can change your prescription safely.
What is Citalopram (Celexa) and what does it treat?
Citalopram is a prescription antidepressant, and Celexa is its brand name. It belongs to a group of medicines called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). It’s FDA-approved to treat depression in adults. It works by raising levels of serotonin, a brain chemical that helps control mood. Most people start to feel better after 1–2 weeks, and the full effect can take 4–6 weeks.

Generic · Celexa brandDosages and strengths of Citalopram
Citalopram is available in the following oral dosage forms:
- Film-coated tablets: 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg per tablet
- Capsules: 30 mg per capsule
- Oral solution: 10 mg of citalopram per 5 mL (≈ 2 mg/mL)
The usual dose is 20 mg once a day, in the morning or evening, with or without food. Your doctor may raise it to a maximum of 40 mg a day after at least a week. The maximum dose is 20 mg a day if you:
- Are over 60
- Have liver problems
- Take medicines such as cimetidine or omeprazole
- Process the medicine slowly because of your genes (CYP2C19 poor metabolizers)
How much does a Citalopram prescription cost?
1. Prescription cost
A Citalopram prescription through Your Doctors Online starts from $20/month with our consultation plan. This covers your visit with a licensed doctor, new prescriptions or refills, dose adjustments, and follow-up messages during the month. You can cancel anytime.
2. Medication cost
- Without insurance: generic Citalopram is one of the lowest-cost antidepressants. A 30-day supply of 20 mg tablets averages about $19 at retail price, and can be as low as about $4 with a free pharmacy discount card.
- With insurance: most plans cover generic Citalopram, usually for a small copay. A 90-day supply may cost less per month.
- Tablets vs other forms: tablets are the cheapest option. The 30 mg capsules and the oral solution cost much more.
3. Total cost
For most people taking tablets, the total monthly cost is about $24–$43. That’s $20 for the prescription plus about $4–$23 for the medicine, depending on your dose, pharmacy, and whether you use insurance or a discount card.

- Low sodium: headache, confusion, weakness, unsteadiness (more common in older adults)

- Mania: racing thoughts, very high energy, or little need for sleep
