Common questions about getting prescriptions & refills through telehealth
How can I refill my medication through a telehealth visit?
Refilling your medication through a telehealth visit with Your Doctors Online is simple. During the virtual consultation, a licensed doctor reviews your current prescription, medical history, and symptoms to determine whether a refill is appropriate. Here’s how the process works:
- Download the Your Doctors Online app and create an account
- Share details about your current prescription, including the medication name and dosage
- A doctor reviews your medical history and symptoms during the telehealth visit
- If medically appropriate, your prescription refill is sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy
Can I get a prescription without seeing a doctor?
You cannot legally get a prescription without a doctor evaluating your condition. However, you don’t always need to visit a walk-in clinic in person. With telemedicine, you can speak with a licensed doctor online who reviews your symptoms and medical history. If medication is clinically appropriate, the doctor can send your prescription electronically to your preferred pharmacy.
What might prevent my prescription refill from being approved?
A refill may not be approved if your symptoms have changed, the medication requires lab monitoring, there are safety concerns, or the medication is restricted. If a refill isn’t appropriate, your clinician will explain your options.
Is it possible to get medication online without a prescription?
You can buy some over-the-counter medications without a prescription. But for other medications, e.g, antibiotics, the federal regulations require a prescription before a pharmacy can provide them.
What if I need to transfer my prescription to a different pharmacy?
You can choose any pharmacy you prefer. If your prescription hasn’t been picked up yet, we can send it to a new pharmacy at your request.
Can anyone prescribe medication online?
No, only authorized health professionals can fill and refill prescriptions online. This includes licensed:
- Doctors (MDs)
- Nurse practitioners
- Pharmacist
- Dentist
- Veterinarian
- Midwife
- Physician assistant
Our doctors are licensed, which means they can perform a medical assessment online to ensure your treatment is safe.
