Vape Juice Flavors May Cause Heart Problems According to New Research

Vape Juice Flavors May Cause Heart Problems According to Research

A recent study from the American Heart Association published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology has revealed that nine of the juice flavorings of vape could harm blood vessels. The flavorings were tested on endothelial cells. These cells line not just the blood vessels but also the inside of the heart.

The flavors that were found dangerous even at low levels were vanilla, clove, cinnamon, burnt flavor, banana, strawberry, and spicy cooling. The other two that complete the nine are mint and butter. Out of all nine, strawberry had the most harmful effects on the cells.

Vape Flavors May Damage Production of Nitric Oxide

At high levels, every one of the nine flavorings also damaged the production of nitric oxide, which is a molecule that lets the blood vessels widen so blood can flow through them. Even when used at low levels, vanilla, burnt flavor, clove, and cinnamon have caused reduced levels of nitric oxide and raised levels of the inflammatory marker interleukin-6.

According to the lead author, less nitric oxide and more inflammation are some of the initial changes that occur and lead to cardiovascular disease and events such as stroke and heart attacks. These are therefore considered early indications of heart disease.

More Research Still Needs to be Conducted

This particular study was short-term and done on human cells in a petri dish. More research is therefore needed to conclusively prove that electronic cigarettes are damaging to your heart. The high concentrations that the researchers used in the study are improbable to be attained in the real world but the low levels are more possibly close to a real-life scenario.

So that doesn’t mean that the findings were not significant. And even if the most popular juice flavors (lemon twist, beetle juice, and unicorn milk) were not tested, it doesn’t mean that those are safe. Each flavor that the researchers tested was revealed to be linked to some level of risk.

Are E-Cigarettes Safe?

Is it time to stop believing that using electronic cigarettes is a healthy alternative to using other products that have tobacco and nicotine? When you think about it, these warnings or cautionary revelations are still scary.
