Middle age lady with ADEM  – a rare Neurological Condition

I am 46 years old, suffering from Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis for as long as I can remember. My symptoms include fever, headache, drowsiness, behavioural changes, nausea and vomiting. Once or twice I also had a seizure. The severity of this disease varies from person to person, and lucky me, I have a mild form, and hence I am still alive.

I am not sure how I got the disease, but it could be due to an infection I had during childhood.

Vulnerable patients like me and Deadly Covid-19

Amidst the depressing times of this Pandemic, where the light at the end of the tunnel is only through vaccinations, I wondered what the right choice for me is? I am vulnerable and have an autoimmune disease.

I was very anxious, like other people, about getting the jab. Many queries and fears were floating in my mind. What if the vaccine is dangerous for me and causes an autoimmune response? Are there any side effects? Which vaccine is safe for my age and condition?

The pandemic had limited my access to the clinic for advice as I didn’t want to expose myself to COVID-19.

Random Browsing and Your Doctors Online tremendous help with COVID-19 vaccine decision

One fine Monday morning, with all the confusion and fears in my mind, I decided to search on the internet and quickly discovered the Your Doctors Online website. To my great amazement, the doctor was well versed in my rare disorder and had a complete grasp on the subject of Covid-19 Vaccinations.

My main aim was to get a professional opinion regarding the vulnerability of my condition and the choice of vaccination best suited for me. My chat lasted for over an hour, and I was confident in making my decision by the end of it.

We discussed in detail the three types of FDA-authorized vaccines in the USA, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson &Jonson. We both shared our views regarding their origin, advantages of vaccines, efficacy and their side effects.

I must admit that I was proud of the doctor I consulted with because she gave me all facts and figures and quoted all references from authentic sources like CDC, WHO and  Lancet journal.

This 24/7 doctor’s website islovely combination of professionalism and care, and I appreciate it very much. There is a personal touch to it.

I want to say thank you to all the doctors who are working tirelessly with compassion and dedication towards a healthy outcome in these times of need.

After the chat with the doctor, I got my COVID-19 yesterday morning with full confidence and a smile on my face thanks to Your Doctors Online.

Keep up the good work. Cheers!

Information added by Dr. Arshia Maheen:
Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM)

National Organization of Rare Disease has classified ADEM as a rare neurological disorder that causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. It damages Myelin Sheath, the protective coating of nerve fibres resulting in demyelination. It is the process that damages the function of the nerve fibres, causing a wide range of neurological symptoms. Commonly this occurs in young children with a mean age of 5-8 years.

In San Diego, California, a study estimated ADEM incidence in people under 20 years as 4 per 100,000.

The exact cause of this disease unknown, but it results in an improper response of the body’s immune system.
